Air quality

We undertake regular monitoring of air quality using 'diffusion tubes' and 'real-time monitoring equipment'.

Results from our real-time monitoring, general information and data on air quality in the council area and in the rest of Northern Ireland is available at www.airqualityni.co.uk

Where we have found levels of pollution above health-based standards, we have declared an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and drawn up an Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) to improve air quality, in consultation with residents, businesses and other key stakeholders.

Within our area we have declared an AQMA along part of the Upper Newtownards Road where the air has been affected by pollution, principally nitrogen dioxide (NO²) from road transport.
