Stray and unwanted dogs

We face a huge problem with stray and unwanted dogs within the Lisburn and Castlereagh area.  We scan each dog collected to get the owner's details from the dog's microchip to enable the dog to be successfully returned.

Should the dog not be microchipped we will rehome it.

Reporting a stray or lost dog

Please phone our Environmental Health team on 028 9244 7397 or email us at ehealth@lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk  between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday.

Between 5pm and 10pm weekdays, and 9am and 6pm on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays stray dogs should be reported to our Environmental Health team on 028 9244 7600, all service requests will be dealt with the next working day.

If you have lost your dog and it is in our dog kennels' fees will be charged.

What happens to stray or lost dogs

Most people think of a stray dog as one without a home. This is not the case. The Dogs (NI) Order 1983 describes a stray dog as any dog that is not on its owner’s property and not accompanied by any person.  The Environmental Wardens can seize any straying dog and impound it until the owner can be traced.

Stray dogs are kept for 5 days after which the kennel provider will seek to rehome the dog.

We actively seek to rehome any dogs that are not reclaimed.
