Inspiring volunteers and community organisations from across Lisburn and Castlereagh were honoured at the 2026 Mayor’s Community Awards, held in Island Hall at Lagan Valley Island.

The annual event celebrates the incredible individuals and groups who give their time, skills and passion to support others and strengthen communities across the council area.

Hosted by presenter Ibe Sesay, the evening brought together community champions, volunteers, elected members and civic leaders to recognise those whose dedication makes a real difference to people’s lives.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Alderman Amanda Grehan, praised the commitment and generosity shown by volunteers across the area, “The Mayor’s Community Awards are a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary work happening in communities across Lisburn and Castlereagh.

"Our volunteers and community groups give so much of their time and energy to help others, create opportunities and bring people together. It is a privilege to recognise their achievements and thank them for the difference they make every day.”

Awards were presented across six categories, recognising both individuals and community organisations whose work has created lasting impact.

Individual Awards

Brian McDowell Guiding Light Award

Winner: Karen Ryan - Recognised for her tireless volunteering supporting children and adults with disabilities through inclusive projects including sensory rooms, forest schools and therapeutic activities.

Runners-up: Stephanie Lynas and Julie Turtle

Fiona Irvine North Star Award

Winner: Johnny Walker - Honoured for his lifelong dedication to supporting young adults with severe learning disabilities through programmes that build confidence, independence and life skills.

Runners-up: Philip Trimble and Katrina Cather

Rising Star Award

Winner: Matthew Wales - Celebrated for his inspiring volunteer work supporting children with autism and helping create a welcoming environment where every child can participate and thrive.

Runners-up: Ashley Cromie and Sophia Devine

Community Group Awards

Golden Star Award

Winner: Moira Friendship Group - Supporting nearly 300 members aged 50+, the group provides a wide range of social, creative and wellbeing activities that help older people stay active, connected and valued.

Runners-up: Lisburn Chess Club and Lagan Valley Rural Transport

Constellation Award

Winner: Glenclare Community Group - Recognised for transforming their local hall into a vibrant community hub supporting wellbeing, connection and activities for people of all ages.

Runners-up: Hygiene Bank Moira and Lisburn Foodbank

Together We Shine Award

Winner: Live Life Wellbeing Centre - The centre was recognised for its life-changing work supporting people with severe learning disabilities to actively participate in their community through volunteering, advocacy and partnership working.

Runners-up: SEN Space and Perfectly Prideful

Guests also enjoyed live entertainment from The Jerseytones, adding to the celebratory atmosphere as volunteers and organisations were recognised for their outstanding contributions.

The memorable evening was made possible with the support of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s partners, Education Authority, South-Eastern Health & Social Care Trust and Volunteer Now.

The Mayor’s Community Awards continues to shine a light on the individuals and organisations whose passion and dedication make them the true stars of communities across Lisburn and Castlereagh, as they play a vital role in creating inclusive, supportive and thriving communities for all.
