Mayor of Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council, Councillor Kurtis Dickson paid tribute to Council staff, community volunteers and all the statutory partners who have been involved the emergency response and recovery over the weekend following Storm Éowyn.
Mayor Dickson said;
“This storm has brought great challenges for everyone. With significant damage to buildings and homes, fallen trees, blocked roads and widespread power outages, the recovery will be ongoing for some time. Our partner agencies and first responders have been working round the clock, sometimes leaving their own families to go and help others. Many Council staff have been on the ground with them all weekend helping to remove fallen trees and dangerous debris, clearing roads and making sure the area is safe as people start to get back out and about. Our officers are also working hard to repair damage to our own facilities and to ensure our parks and open spaces are safe to visit and that services can return to full operations.
As always, our communities also continue to pull together and support each other. I want to thank everyone involved as we continue to work together to recover from the impact of the worst storm we have seen for many years.
LCCC Community Assistance Centres remain open from 10am-3pm at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex, Hillsborough Village Centre, Dundonald International Ice Bowl and Lough Moss Leisure Centre on Sunday 26 January. If you need somewhere warm to rest, a hot drink or simply somewhere to charge your device please come along. Council Officers are there to support you. An Officer from NIE will also be available at Lagan Valley LeisurePlex to provide help and offer advice with issues related to power outages.
A number of Council services and facilities continue to be affected, please visit our service updates webpage ( www.lisburncastlereagh.gov.uk/w/service-updates ) for latest updates and check our messages on social media.
I urge everyone to be aware of ongoing risks and further weather alerts in the coming days and to exercise caution, especially when on the roads. LCCC Councillors and staff will continue to support in any way we can as we work together to recover from the impact of Storm Éowyn.”
