Interested in a career in welding?
Then consider applying for the Welding Academy we are offering our residents. It will be delivered by SERC.
This two week intensive course will take place from 9am to 5pm at SERC’s Professional Skills Centre, 17 Dundrod Road, Crumlin, BT29 4SR.
The academy will cover the following:
- a two-week hands-on placement with a local employer with a guaranteed job interview on successful completion
- two hours of personalised 1:1 sessions with an independent careers advisor
- travel allowance available for the duration of the training and placement
Upcoming dates
Programme 1 will start on the 28 October 2024.
Programme 2 will start on the 17 February 2025.
Who can apply?
Candidates must meet the following criteria to apply:
- a resident of the council area
- be unemployed or work less than 16 hours per week. Preference will be given to those who are economically inactive or long-term unemployed
- be at risk of redundancy
- be available for all aspects of the academy
You will learn:
- the MIG/MAG welding techniques to produce welds to TWI Code standard
- how to detect weld defects through visual checks and destructive testing methods
You will gain:
- UK welding standard certification (British Standard 4872) in both BS4872 Fillet vertical up MAG and BS4872 Butt vertical up MAG. These certifications validate your ability to weld on sheet, plate, and pipe for mild steel
- an introduction to working with aluminium
- boost your confidence in welding and gain practical experience through a work placement with a local employer
- the skills necessary for employment in MIG/MAG welding roles
